What Is Dextroconvex Scoliosis And How To Treat It?

Today I want to talk a bit about dextroconvex scoliosis – what is it, what to do with it, and can yoga help. We know that there is regular type of scoliosis, which results in “C” shape curvature of the spine. Dextroconvex scoliosis is also known as an atypical form of scoliosis because the spine curvature forms “S” shape.

What are the problems with “S” shape?

What is dextroconvex scoliosis? The muscle spasms of this type of scoliosis can go to different directions and also there are complications associated with back, chest and arm muscles which also become prone to spasms. In kids this can lead to chronic shoulder pain. The sooner the disorder is identified and the treatment starts the better.

Since this atypical scoliosis causes lots of pain due to spasms in muscles, the first remedy is a pain killer. Of course it cannot be considered as a long term medicine that will help to solve the problem. The more important is to conduct a proper physical therapy, both active and passive to manage the spasms and reduce painful sensations. The idea of scoliosis treatment is to keep the muscles, tendons and ligaments strong, which is achieved by regular work with the groups of muscles in back, chest and arms. The regular physical activity is more important than its intensity; this will allow reducing the frequency of the spasms and improving the condition of both muscles and the spine.

Can Yoga Help?

Yoga can be very helpful to treat dextroconvex scoliosis symptoms, including dextroconvex thoracic scoliosis and dextroconvex thoracolumbar scoliosis. Thoracic is a chest region scoliosis and thoracolumbar refers to chest and lower back. There are many asanas or yoga poses for back pain that can be successfully used to provide a mild treatment for the said regions but these poses should be chosen by a qualified person, who knows the patient’s condition and other possible or associated health issues.

Another part of yoga that can be very useful is relaxation. This will help ease the muscle pain and increase the flexibility of the body. Good practice of relaxation is also helpful to reduce the spasms and pain frequency.

One more thing to consider is a diet. It is not a secret that what we eat has a direct impact on our health. The quality of food will be reflected in the state of your muscles, so to prevent the spasms, muscle pain, and improve the strength and elasticity of the muscles the diet should contain enough nutrients; for example, increasing the amount of fresh vegetables and fruits along with whole grains and cereals can significantly improve the state of the muscles. Again, any diet you choose should be approved by the supervising doctor in case there are other health issues that can be worsened by the wrongly selected diet. The proper hydration and the required potassium levels are also required to keep the muscles well toned and prevent spasms.

The common treatment for scoliosis is surgery. While it can dramatically improve the state of the spinal muscles, and is also considered to be one of the best remedies for dextroconvex scoliosis, yet, the full recovery is not guaranteed. So since this can be a lifelong health issue, the proper pain management along with physical therapy, including myofascial release, is needed to lead the normal life.
